The Winesap apple is an old apple variety and is still one of the leading strains being grown in the US. Winesap apple trees are well known and widely grown for their crisp tangy fruit. The fruit is round, medium in size and has bright to deep red speckled skin when it ripens in September or October. It keeps well and is great for fresh eating, dessert, canning or juice because of its tart flavor. Winesap apple trees need pollinators such as Gala, Red or Golden Delicious. This apple cannot pollinate other apple varieties.
